Don’t Forget Your PSA Test… Even During a Pandemic

Man getting a blood draw at physician’s office

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. men, and one of the leading cancer killers among men, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

There are no early warning signs of prostate cancer, which can make it a potentially silent killer. In rare cases, prostate cancer can cause symptoms, so you should see your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night, sometimes urgently
  • Difficulty starting or holding back urination
  • Weak, dribbling, or interrupted flow of urine
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Difficulty in having an erection
  • A decrease in the amount of fluid ejaculated
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Pressure or pain in the rectum
  • Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs

When Should You Get Screened

According to the US Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF), if you have no family history and are not African American, you should start getting tested at age 50. Those with a family history should start getting screened at age 40. African American men should start at age 45.

Medical experts say the benefits of getting tested include early detection, which could offer you a better chance to cure the disease.

How do you screen for Prostate Cancer?

Two tests that are commonly used to screen for prostate cancer include:

  • A blood test called aprostate specific antigen (PSA) test. PSA is a substance your prostate makes. This test measures the level of PSA in your blood. Your PSA level may be high if you have prostate cancer and for many other reasons, such as having an enlarged prostate, a prostate infection, or taking certain medicines.
  • Digital rectal examination, when a health care provider inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into a man’s rectum to feel the prostate for anything abnormal, such as cancer.

How Do You Treat Prostate Cancer?

Your doctor can discuss the best treatment option for you. Fortunately, there are many effective ways to address prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, here are the current treatment options:

  • Observation or Active Surveillance
  • Surgery
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Hormone Therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Targeted Therapy

HealthTronics partners with hundreds of urologists across the country with their innovative cryotherapy systems called Cryocare. Instead of being treated with strong medications or having to undergo multiple rounds of radiation, cryotherapy uses small ice crystals to kill the cancer cells.

Cryotherapy is not major surgery. Many patients that are too weak or ill to have a prostatectomy (prostate removal) and don’t want radiation therapy can still consider cryotherapy. If your cancer is localized to the prostate, you may be a good candidate for cryotherapy. Ask your urologist if cryotherapy is right for your cancer treatment.

Treating Summertime Kidney Stones with Mobile Lithotripsy

Much of the country is experiencing a massive heat wave, including many areas with triple digit temperatures. This means high humidity, which can lead to dehydration for many people. Drinking plenty of water can help reduce your risk of heat stroke and dehydration. But it can also lower your risk of developing painful kidney stonesThe Cleveland Clinic finds more people go to the doctor with kidney stones during the summer months than any other time of the year.

Kidney stones form when certain chemicals like calcium, oxalates and phosphorous form crystals that grow into stones and block the flow of urine. They can be incredibly painful and downright dangerous. They can vary in size from a grain of sand to more than an inch in diameter. They build up gradually, and can be found anywhere in the urinary tract.

Drinking soda, especially dark colored colas, can significantly increase your risk of stone formation.  If left untreated, kidney stones can block the ureter and make it narrower, which increases the risk of infection and added strain on the kidneys.

Fortunately, there are many effective treatments for kidney stones, including Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy. Lithotripsy is a simple and noninvasive procedure where your urologist uses sound waves to break down the stones so they can pass naturally. Using x-ray or ultrasound, physicians target the stone and use multiple high-energy pressure waves until it breaks into tiny particles. This helps them pass naturally from the urinary system.

While lithotripsy is a routine procedure, the equipment your physician uses is extremely important. HealthTronics provides the mobile equipment to your urologist and ensures that these sophisticated and high-tech devices are maintained according to industry standards. Physicians do more than 50,000 lithotripsy procedures every year with our equipment. Our lithotripsy technologists, who have an average of 12 years of experience, work side by side with physicians during every procedure.

Technologists Support the Treatment of Prostate Cancer

When urologist Eric Giesler, MD opted to use the Endocare® Cryocare® cryotherapy system to treat his patients’ prostate cancer, he had two vendor choices “and this, in my opinion, is the better one.”

Also better: the technologist support he gets when he uses the system to treat about 30 patients annually at four Austin-area hospitals.

“HealthTronics technologists are pretty important,” said Dr. Giesler, a Urology Austin general provider with a focus on urologic oncology. “They’re looking out for any potential missteps. If you forget something, they’re invaluable as a secondary check.”

A technologist shows up at the hospital with the cryotherapy system under arrangements Dr. Giesler has with HealthTronics. It’s a helpful, extra convenience to go along with Endocare® cryotherapy’s “versatile technology that allows you to treat prostate cancer very precisely,” Dr. Geisler said.

He has built a proven record of success utilizing the system since 2014 – to the point where colleagues in the 42-provider Urology Austin group regularly refer their patients to him for “freezing” prostate tumors. The process is natural, nontoxic and low-impact for high-risk and weaker patients not suited for surgery or radiation therapy.

It also can be used for “salvage cryotherapy,” which is effective in the 20-30 percent of patients where radiation is ineffective. This Endocare® system also is being used more commonly for interventional oncology treatment of cancer cells in lungs and kidneys, as well as on liver metastases and in palliative interventions (including managing pain from metastatic cancer).

Russell Newman in Texas CEO Magazine

HealthTronics president, Russell Newman penned a contributed article titled, ‘A Company’s Most Valued Assets: Customer-Facing Employees’. The important message from Newman: Frontline employees are the agents driving change. Their message to the customers is to “trust me because I can make this easier for you.” And so, if an executive wants to make change easy for customers, he or she needs to make things easy – or at least as easy as possible – for the company’s most valued assets: its customer-facing employees.

Acquisition of Mobile Medical Marketing Covered in Austin Business Journal

HealthTronics, Inc., a mobile medical technology company has acquired mobile laser technology company, Mobile Medical Marketing, LLC (Mobile Medical), based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“With this acquisition, we’re delivering on our strategy to become the first choice for our customers when seeking laser treatments and other mobile medical technology applications,” explained Russell Newman, president of HealthTronics.

Mobile Medical provides various laser therapies for ENT, neurology and ob-gyn procedures to hospital systems, surgery centers and physician offices in Albuquerque. The acquisition expands HealthTronics’ fleet of mobilized medical technology and strengthens its reach into other areas of the U.S., including New Mexico.

Earlier this year, HealthTronics acquired United Therapies, a provider of mobile lithotripsy and laser technology to healthcare providers in the Midwest, Northeast and Southwest regions of the United States.

“Rising healthcare costs have made mobile medical technology an attractive option for reducing costs among hospitals and surgical centers. By utilizing mobile equipment, providers can have access to new technology and treatments when they otherwise could not afford the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining the equipment,” said Newman.

HealthTronics’ technology is “mobile” because the company delivers the medical device to the health care facility where the physician conducts each procedure. In addition to servicing and updating the equipment, each delivery includes a dedicated, highly trained HealthTronics’ technologist to assist with the operation of the equipment.

Austin Urologist Discusses Cryotherapy and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with KTBC-TV

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, a time when the disease is brought into focus.

Dr. Eric Giesler, a urologist in Austin, Texas, talked about cryotherapy for recurrent prostate cancer with local Fox affiliate, KTBC.

Dr. Giesler’s patient and local pastor, Rick Cundieff, shared his prostate cancer journey and his positive experience with cryotherapy. Cundieff had the treatment twice — the first time in 2005, and then again this year when the cancer struck again.

Both Cundieff and Dr. Giesler urged men to start the conversation about prostate cancer, the PSA screening test, and treatment options, should a problem arise.

HealthTronics Acquires Management Company, Expands Mobile Lithotripsy Solutions

AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) JULY 31, 2015 HealthTronics, Inc., an Austin, Texas-based mobile medical services and medical devices company, has expanded its mobile portfolio with the acquisition of the management company for two lithotripsy service companies, Carolina Lithotripsy and Advanced Urotech.

Lithotripsy, a minimally invasive procedure for treating kidney stones, uses shock waves to break the stone into small particles to allow the body to more easily pass it out.

Carolina Lithotripsy has provided lithotripsy services in North Carolina since 1984 and Advanced Urotech in Southern California since 1997. The two entities will now be managed by HealthTronics, adding more than 80 physician partners and about 20 employees under the HealthTronics umbrella.

“With this acquisition, doctors and hospitals in these areas – whether rural community hospitals or comprehensive medical centers – will have access to HealthTronics’ clinical expertise and diverse mobile medical portfolio,” said Russell Newman, President of HealthTronics.

In addition to lithotripsy, HealthTronics offers technology for microwave ablation, nerve monitoring, laser treatment and cryotherapy. As a mobile services provider, HealthTronics delivers the mobile device to the medical facility where the physician conducts the procedure. A dedicated, highly trained HealthTronics technician remains onsite for equipment operation needs, and experienced ancillary staff prevent any interruption in service.

Since becoming an independent company in February 2014, HealthTronics has completed six distribution and/or acquisition transactions, positioning HealthTronics as one of the top mobile solutions providers in the United States.

About HealthTronics
HealthTronics, Inc., founded in 1989 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, provides minimally invasive, mobile medical therapies for clinically sophisticated applications such as urological and interventional radiology indications. The company brings its advanced technology and support systems to healthcare providers across the United States. HealthTronics’ solutions include lithotripsy services, laser and cryotherapy equipment rentals, maintenance services and physician partnership opportunities.

HealthTronics Invests in Additional Mobile Medical Technologies As Cost Efficient Solution for Hospitals, Doctors

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) May 27, 2015 In today’s healthcare landscape, where costs are growing and margins are getting tighter, it can be challenging for doctors and hospitals to keep up with the latest technology for cutting edge treatments.

Austin-based HealthTronics, Inc. is offering a solution to that problem, with minimally invasive, mobile medical therapies for clinically sophisticated applications. The company has now broadened its mobile medical portfolio with the acquisition of Laser Ventures, Inc., a mobile laser technology company based in Woodstock, Georgia. The company’s lasers are used for a wide variety of procedures, including urology, orthopedics, gynecology, neurology and many other indications.

“By mobilizing more technology, we can effectively and efficiently accommodate the needs of any size health care provider, from comprehensive medical centers to remote and rural communities,” explained Russell Newman, president of HealthTronics.

For over 25 years, HealthTronics has focused on providing mobile medical technology for urology indications. Since becoming an independent company in February 2014, HealthTronics has been acquiring companies and technologies to serve more specialists, including interventional radiologists and oncologists.

Newman says medical providers and healthcare facilities benefit from mobile technology because there is no large capital payment required, there is little to no risk of the device becoming obsolete, and there are no administrative headaches of maintaining the technology or training support staff to help operate it.

HealthTronics’ mobile medical technologies allow doctors and hospitals to access a device for individual procedures so that they can provide a wide array of clinical treatment options without purchasing and servicing big pieces of equipment. Current applications include lithotripsy, microwave ablation, nerve monitoring, laser treatment and cryotherapy for urology and interventional radiology.

HealthTronics delivers the mobile device to the medical facility where the physician conducts the procedure. A dedicated, highly trained HealthTronics technologist assists with operation of the equipment, and studies show that experienced technologists can directly impact the overall treatment success rates.1

HealthTronics is able to accommodate any size healthcare provider, from comprehensive medical centers to those in remote and rural communities.

Said Newman, “HealthTronics’ mobile health solutions can be used for treating cancerous tumors to breaking up kidney stones to nerve monitoring during delicate prostate cancer surgeries. And we’ll continue to listen to physicians and health industry experts to expand our minimally invasive treatment options moving forward.”

HealthTronics Announces Distribution Agreement with Clinicon

AUSTIN, Texas – (September 20, 2014) HealthTronics, Inc., a leading provider of integrated urological and interventional radiology products and services, has signed a distribution agreement through its Endocare, Inc. subsidiary with Clinicon Corporation for its high precision laser technology.  The addition expands HealthTronics’ portfolio of minimally invasive, mobile, surgical technology—offering more choices for healthcare providers and their patients.

Under the agreement, HealthTronics will make available Clinicon’s FDA-cleared SureLase™ CO2 Laser System and Fiber Accessories to physicians, hospitals, surgical centers and other health care providers for a wide range of surgical specialties.

HealthTronics and Clinicon will jointly exhibit at the AAO-HNSF 2014 in Orlando to address the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) market. Some of the most common ENT surgeries performed with the SureLase™ CO2 Laser System include micro laryngoscopies, bronchoscopies, and stapedectomies.

“Clinicon’s high precision laser technology replaces bulky articulating mirror arms with thin fiber optics to reduce trauma to patients during laser surgical procedures. This makes it a natural complement to our portfolio of minimally invasive mobile products,” said Russell Newman, President of HealthTronics.

Clinicon’s surgical tools are used to deliver CO2 laser energy for incision, ablation and coagulation or cauterization of soft tissue. The CO2 laser, often known as the original “surgical laser,” most resembles the traditional surgical instruments for cutting, ablation and coagulation.

Since becoming an independent company in February 2014, HealthTronics has pursued a strategy to expand its portfolio of minimally invasive mobile technology. Said Newman, “With mobile technology, health care providers can offer more comprehensive care efficiently and effectively by not taking on large capital costs and maintenance. That’s an advantage for the provider and the patient.”

To date, HealthTronics has added nerve monitoring equipment for use during robotic prostate surgery and targeted microwave energy for ablation of soft tissues. Other technologies currently offered by the company include Endocare® cryotherapy systems for ablation of prostate, kidney and lung cancer tumors, lithotripters for fragmenting kidney stones and lasers for treating benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).

HealthTronics Acquires Three Mobile Lithotripsy Companies

AUSTIN, Texas – (August 15, 2014) – HealthTronics, Inc. has acquired three mobile lithotripsy service companies, Baltimore Lithotripsy Associates (BLA), American Mobile Advantage and American Mobile Advantage CA (collectively AMA), thereby expanding its fleet of mobilized technology for urological care.

BLA and AMA have been providing lithotripsy services in and around the Mid-Atlantic region, Northern California and the state of Washington for over a dozen years.

“The acquisitions underscore our mission to provide exceptional and effective technologies that improve patient care,” said Russell Newman, President of HealthTronics. “Health care providers will have easier access to lithotripsy technology as well as HealthTronics’ broad portfolio of interventional radiology and urology solutions.”
Newman said the acquisition strengthens HealthTronics relationship with the regions’ hospitals and large urology group practices, and also complements the company’s strategic goal—to support and grow its core mobile technology and services business. “By mobilizing more technology, we can effectively and efficiently accommodate the needs of any size health care provider, from comprehensive medical centers to remote and rural communities.”

Lithotripsy, a noninvasive procedure for treating kidney stones, uses shock waves to break the stone into small particles to allow the body to more easily pass it out.
