Cryotherapy

In 2008, via its acquisition of AMPI, HealthTronics®, Inc. became the largest provider of cryoablation services nationally. Cryoablation is a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy diseased tissue, including cancer cells.Following the AMPI acquisition, HealthTronics broadened its interest in cryoablation beyond providing services to include the technology and equipment itself and in July 2009, HealthTronics acquired Endocare, a medical device manufacturer of proprietary cryoablation technologies for treating cancerous tissue and tumors.

Endocare's Cryocare CS system provides a renal cryoablation treatment and prostate cancer treatment called Cryocare TCAP (Therapeutic CryoAblation of the Prostate). Cryoablation is a minimally-invasive procedure that uses ice to destroy both renal and prostate cancer. The key elements of the FDA-cleared Cryocare CS system include:

  • Integrated ultrasound technology that provides internal visualization of the prostate gland
  • Patented planning software that assists physicians in determining optimal treatment of the entire gland
  • Urethral warmer
  • Vacuum-insulated prostate and renal cryoprobes
  • Brachytherapy-like grid fixed to the ultrasound stepper
